2019 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Review

Wow, what a beauty! Such a smart looking sports car but somehow this review feels like the car leaves a little to be desired.

Sure, power and speed is what the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is all about, but, have Alfa left out just a tad too many creature comforts?

Let’s see what CarSales had to say in their review.

The Alfa Romeo 4C has always been targeted at a niche audience. It’s raw, it’s loud, it’s primal… even more so when you take the roof off this Spider version.

And yet, for some people, there’s something here worth considering.

For a start how good looking is this thing? The Italians certainly know how to style a motorcar.

What we’ve got is a mid-engine rear wheel drive, two seat convertible that overlays a carbon fibre monocoque in a composite body.

It weighs just 1035 kilograms and that delivers pretty impressive acceleration when combined with the one point seven five litre turbo petrol engine and six-speed dual clutch transmission. With the engine blurting and burbling behind your head it’s a pretty aural experience.

There won’t be much conversation with your passenger when you hit the loud pedal. The rawness of the experience now tests 4C Spider was heightened by its optional racing package.

For an extra $12,000 on top of the $99,000 asking price you can get Pirelli racing tyres, racing suspension, sports racing exhaust system, and the staggered alloy wheels.

One thing the 4C does not need is even stiffer suspension. At least on the road. The Spider ricochets from bump to bump and gives your kidneys a good massage.

When it gets rough you really need to be on your guard because the 4C can get unruly.

Combine that with the lack of power assistance for the steering and the 4C is a real labour. And not necessarily of love. On top of that of course this is not a very practical vehicle.

There’s little storage, a tiny boot and an antique media system that never wanted to cooperate. And yet, right day, right moment, right road, the 4C does come into its own.

This thing is so direct and so visceral it gives us all a taste of a very different type of motoring. It bangs through the gears. The exhaust crackles and pops. It goes hard. But the reality is for most people the 4C is just too confronting.

Sure, a few people would swear by it but I reckon plenty more would swear at it.
