2019 Hyundai Kona Elite Review

Looks like Hyundai have done it again. But, lacking in some aspects could be a bit of a let down.

I guess when you price a vehicle to fit into a buyer’s budget you have to watch the number of bells and whistles.

That said, this review from CarSales certainly gives the Hyundai Kona Elite more than enough to be proud of. Read on below…

Hopefully by now you’ve caught on to the fact that Hyundai are pushing out some seriously good product in their growing line-up of passenger cars. The Hyundai Kona is no exception.

When the Kona first hit our roads in 2017, we pitched it against the Mazda CX3 and it won. If you’re familiar with the CX3, you’ll realise that’s no small task. The updated Kona brings more kit and a lower starting price. The end! Only kidding, let’s take a closer look.

One step down from the top spec Kona Highlander is this Kona Elite and it’s probably where you’ll want to put your money. All Kona models are available with a choice of two four-cylinder petrol powertrains, automatic or manual transmissions and two or all-wheel drive grip.

And behind the wheel our two-litre two-wheel drive Kona delivers a perky and responsive drive with lovely steering feel. But anyone chasing more punch will be after the all-wheel drive 1.6 Turbo which, by the way, is the engine transmission combo that took out the CX3 back in 2017.

Technology is great with stand-alone satellite navigation, rear view camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity and, more importantly at this level, standard safety features are great, including autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert and driver attention warning. These can be optioned to entry level go and active as part of an advanced safety pack.

I really like the interior of the Kona. In this example we’ve got red contrast stitching, piping, nice red details up here. It feels really fresh and modern and it’s got a bit of personality about it.

Second row there’s plenty of room and this nice flat big seat base means you’ll fit three people back here but it will be a little big snug for three adults.

But it’s not perfect. There are no air vents, no charge points and this high sill level kind of makes it feel a little bit enclosed back here.

Boot space is reasonable for a compact SUV and you’ll find a temporary spare concealed beneath.

As is often the case, after a week of driving the Kona, I’ve realised just how many there are on our roads and I fully expect that’s only going to increase.
