There’s a battle currently raging in midsize SUVs and Mercedes-Benz is determined to stay ahead of its arch-rival, BMW, with this updated GL C-Class, now on sale in Australia.

The GLC for 2020 introduces revised design, new instrument cluster and infotainment system, plus added safety features as standard. It’s those surprise and delight features that will help sell the GLC to new customers, but equally important is the new engine family powering the rear drive GLC 200, at entry-level, and the four-wheel drive GLC 300.

There are incremental power and torque gains for both engines with the GLC 300 benefiting more with its 0 to 100 kilo meter per hour acceleration time reduced by nearly a second to 6.2 seconds.

Despite the difference in output, the engine in the GLC 200 still feels lively and refined, and the lower-priced variant is arguably a little more fun to drive as well.

The rear drive GLC turns in smartly and its handling comes closer to neutral than the all-wheel-drive GLC 300, but the GLC 300 offers better body control in the bends.

Ride comfort is fine over smaller bumps in the road but can feel sharp over potholes and other rough stuff frequently a fixture of Australian country roads.

Buyers will appreciate the GLC slightly weighted steering, however, and although the brake pedal needs a stronger push, it does feel reassuring and provides immediate response.

This particular vehicle is equipped with the optional AMG line package, which includes these wonderfully shaped seats with these fantastic bolsters for comfort. As well as that obviously the GLC are standard comes with the new MB UX system, the infotainment system, and also it gets this touchpad controller, in lieu of the dial that was used previously.

Safety features made standard across the range comprise traffic sign assist, blind spot assist, exit warning and rear cross traffic alert.

Mercedes-Benz has raised the starting price of the GLC range by nearly $4,000.

With the updated variants the GLC is well placed to remain the best-selling model line in the prestige midsize SUV segment. And the campaign is just beginning for the revised GLC class, with plug-in hybrids and AMG high-performance models set to follow in the new year.
